I recently found your blog. I have a question for you Math related. Our county has us teaching numbers 0-5 and 6-10 in the first quarter but just one-to-one, writing numerals, etc... I introduced my kiddos to number bracelets and tried to do the Math their way two sided beans you shake and show parts early on. I found most of this crew wasn't ready for it in the first month so I understood why the district said not to teach composing/decomposing or addition in the first half of the year. Now as we move into geometry I think more of them are ready. Did you find that your kiddos took to the decomposition and the addition sentences well? Do you find it helps to stay on one number in a variety of ways and then move on? Thanks, Jenn
Hi Jenn, We do one number a week. We do many activities related to that number including decomposing. Not all students get it but they are exposed. The first year I freaked out thinking I was going to be writing equations the first 9 weeks of school. We really stress the equality part of the equation helping them to realize that there are many things that are equal or the same as the number we are working on. I also made number boards that represent this, and we use the number boards as a lesson and to refer to as we are learning the numbers 1-10. These are in my TPT store. This is the second year I taught numbers this way and I love it. We have an excellent consultant, Linda Walker who has been working with our District helping us move into Common Core.
